The short answer
Use 2700K in living rooms and bedrooms for a warm, cozy glow. Use 3000K as a soft-white all-rounder — kitchens, bathrooms, hallways. Use 4000K for real task light where you need to see clearly: kitchen counters, a vanity, a workshop. Lower Kelvin is warmer and more amber; higher Kelvin is cooler and whiter. When in doubt in a living space, go warmer.

2700K vs 3000K
This is a small step, and the one people agonise over most. Both are warm; 3000K simply drops a little of the amber. In a living room or bedroom the extra warmth of 2700K is worth having. In a kitchen or bathroom — tile, pale cabinetry, a mirror you actually get ready at — 3000K keeps whites looking white instead of faintly yellow. If the two rooms share a sightline, pick one and use it in both.
2700K vs 4000K
This is the big jump, and it isn't really a matter of taste — they're two different jobs. 2700K is evening light for rooms you unwind in; 4000K is working light for surfaces you do things on. Put 4000K over a lounge and the room feels like a waiting area; put 2700K over a chopping board and you'll squint at it. Plenty of kitchens run both: 3000K overhead, 4000K under the cabinets.
3000K vs 4000K
This is the task-light argument. 3000K is bright enough for most kitchen and bathroom work while staying comfortable to sit under. 4000K is crisper and better for close, detailed jobs — a vanity, a laundry, a bench. If people linger in the space, 3000K is the safer of the two.
What Kelvin actually means
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K), and it describes the color of the light, not how bright it is. Low numbers look warm and yellow, like a candle or a sunset. High numbers look cool and white, like midday daylight. It runs backwards from how we usually talk about heat — the "warm" light carries the lower number. Brightness is a separate spec, measured in lumens.
What sits above 4000K — and what's in between
4000K is often mistaken for the cold end of the scale. It isn't — it's the middle. Bulbs sold as daylight run roughly 5000K to 6500K, and that is where light genuinely starts to read blue-white: the flat, faintly clinical light of an overcast noon. Next to a 6500K bulb, 4000K looks almost warm. So if you tried a cool bulb once and hated it, check the number before you rule 4000K out — there is a fair chance what you actually had was 5000K or higher.
There is also a step between 3000K and 4000K that rarely makes it onto the front of the box: 3500K, usually labelled bright white. It is the compromise for a room that has to do both jobs — a kitchen you also eat in, a desk in the corner of a living room. If 3000K reads a shade too yellow for the work you do there and 4000K reads a shade too stark once the evening comes, 3500K is the one to try.
And the reason the low end keeps getting recommended after dark: cooler, bluer light is more alerting than warm light. That is useful over a counter at eight in the morning and works against you in a bedroom at eleven at night — which is why 2700K keeps being the answer for rooms you wind down in, and why putting the fixture on a dimmer matters more than the exact number once the sun is down.
When to use each
2700K — warm white. The cozy one. It flatters skin, wood, and warm paint, and it winds a room down at night. 3000K — soft white. The safe middle. Still warm, but a little crisper and cleaner. It's the easy pick for kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways that need to feel bright without going cold. If you want one temperature for the whole main floor, this is usually it.
4000K — neutral white. The working one. Clean and energizing, closer to daylight. Use it where you actually do things — chopping at the counter, shaving at the vanity, folding laundry, working at a bench. It can feel clinical in a lounge, so keep it in task zones. Two rules that save regret
Keep one color temperature per open space — mismatched bulbs in the same sightline look off. And check the CRI (color rendering index): 90 or above means colors and food look true. A warm bulb on a dimmer gives you bright task light and a low evening glow from the same fixture. Shop LED pendants, and for work zones, kitchen island pendants or bathroom lighting. A diffused shade like the travertine cream ball pendant carries a 3000K bulb without tipping cold.
