Nordic Lighting
Nordic lighting is built for long, dark winters: warm, layered, glare-free light and clean, honest shapes. These pendants, sconces and ceiling fixtures do the quiet work of making a room feel like somewhere you want to stay.
The Scandinavian habit worth stealing is quantity. Several small, warm, low sources beat one bright ceiling fixture: a pendant over the table, a sconce by the sofa, a lamp in the corner, each doing a little and none of them glaring. Shapes stay simple and pale so they disappear in daylight and only announce themselves after dark.
Nordic lighting fixtures, by type
About half of this range is pendants and roughly a third is wall lights; the rest is ceiling lights, a short run of modern chandeliers in branch, acrylic and crystal, and a few table lamps. That mix is the Scandinavian brief in miniature. A Nordic pendant light does the table or the kitchen island, hung low enough to keep the bulb out of your eyeline. Wall lights carry the evening, beside a sofa, a bed or along a hall. A Nordic ceiling light or flush fitting suits the rooms where headroom rules out anything hanging, and a Scandinavian chandelier belongs in the one room, usually the dining room, that can take a bigger shape without crowding it.
Materials and sizes
Glass turns up more than any other material here, from clear and coloured shades to globes, discs and rippled glass, followed by iron, acrylic and aluminium, with a smaller group in wood, marble and travertine for a warmer, more natural finish. Glass and acrylic let the light spread; wood and stone hold it in and send it up or down, which is the difference to think about before the shape.
