The short answer
Alabaster is a soft, translucent stone — a fine-grained form of gypsum. Carve it thin and light passes straight through it, so a bulb behind an alabaster shade reads as a warm, honey-coloured glow instead of a hard point of light. Its natural veining shows when it's lit. That mix of real stone and translucency is why it's used for sconces, pendants and chandeliers.
What alabaster actually is
Alabaster is a mineral, not a manufactured material. Most alabaster sold today is gypsum — calcium sulfate — the same mineral used to make plaster. It's soft, about 1.5 to 2 on the Mohs hardness scale, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail. That's exactly why carvers like it: you can cut it into thin, curved panels without it shattering. Cut it thin enough and it stops behaving like stone and starts behaving like a lampshade.
There's an older kind, too. The ancient Egyptians and Romans carved lamps and jars from calcite alabaster, a slightly harder stone. When people say alabaster in lighting today, they almost always mean the gypsum kind. Much of it is quarried in Spain and Italy — Volterra, in Tuscany, has carved alabaster for centuries.
Because it's cut from raw rock, every panel is different. The colour drifts from milk-white to warm cream, and the veining runs through it like weather in a sky. No two fixtures match. That variation is the material, not a defect.
Why alabaster is used in lighting
The whole point is translucency. A frosted-glass shade blocks the bulb and bounces a little light off its surface. Alabaster lets the light through the stone, so the entire shade glows from the inside. It diffuses the bulb into a soft, even wash with almost no glare — closer to candlelight than to a downlight. And because the grain sits inside the stone, you see it only when the light is on. Off, it's a pale sculptural object. On, it's a lantern. Choosing the right bulb
Alabaster looks best under a warm bulb — around 2700K, dimmable. Cooler, bluer bulbs fight the honey tone and make the stone look grey. Most alabaster fixtures take standard E26 or E12 bases; the product page lists the exact fit. A dimmer helps, because alabaster is at its best turned low.
Living with alabaster
Alabaster is porous and soft, so treat it gently. Dust it with a dry, soft cloth. Keep water and household cleaners off the surface — they can mark or etch it. It's an indoor material: not for a steamy bathroom, and never outdoors. Handled kindly, it holds up for years.
