Why 30–36 inches (75–90 cm) works
That gap does two jobs. It drops the light close enough to pool on the counter where you prep and eat. And it keeps the fixture above eye level, so nobody standing at the island stares into a bare bulb, and nobody across the room loses the view. Go higher than 36 inches and the light spreads thin. Go lower than 30 and you start ducking.
Adjust for your ceiling
Every foot of ceiling above 8 feet buys a little more drop. Add about 2 to 3 inches (5–8 cm) of clearance per extra foot. A 10-foot (3 m) ceiling can carry a pendant hung 34 to 40 inches (85–100 cm) above the counter without looking stranded. The taller the room, the longer the cord or stem you'll want, so check the maximum drop on each product page. Adjust for your height and your island
If the main cook is tall, hang toward the higher end so the shade clears their line of sight. If the island doubles as a bar with stools, keep the bottom near 72 inches (185 cm) so seated guests can see each other. Prep-heavy island? A touch higher spreads the light wider. There's a few inches of play here — hang it, stand back, and trust your eye.
Measure before you drill
